UPSTATE TOWN NAMED AMONG 9 FAVORITE SC TOWNS IN THE NATION: HERE'S WHAT TO KNOW

When traveling to South Carolina, Charleston is always at the top of the bucket list of places to visit.

Visitors who flock to the city can't get enough of its historical scenery, like its antebellum architecture and cobblestone streets. Charleston's miles of coastline also make it a perfect place to escape for vacation.

If you are a person who has seen their fair share of S.C.'s most charming city, you might be ready to explore somewhere new.

Nine towns were recently named among WorldAtlas' U.S. favorites, with one Upstate town gracing the roundup. The same town was also written about earlier this week by Southern Living, which listed the 14 best things to do while in the area.

Here's where to plan your next visit in the state.

What Upstate town was mentioned by Southern Living and World Atlas?

Like Charleston, Greenville has become a popular tourist destination in recent years. In 2023, 500,000 trips in the city occurred with 1 million hotel room stays booked, according to a previous Greenville News story. However, if visitors traveled just north of the city, they would discover the underrated town that is Travelers Rest.

The town, located along historic trade routes, has its own rich history to tell ― and its all in its name:

"Travelers Rest earned its name as a resting spot for weary travelers journeying along the Old Buncombe Road (which linked North Carolina to Georgia). First came the Cherokee Native Americans, followed by livestock drovers, and then families seeking relief from the summer heat in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains." said Southern Living.

What is there to do in Travelers Rest?

When visiting Travelers Rest, expect to be nature-bound. As you drive through the town, it's nearly impossible not to get caught up in the beauty of your surroundings. This is because of the town's elevation of 1,099 feet and its backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, offering visitors refuge from city life. Biking on the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail and mingling at Trailblazer Park is a go-to for those who frequent the town, but if you are into shopping, there are many stores for you to scavenge through, like Retro Marketplace and Rabbit Fine Arts Gallery, as recommended by World Atlas.
